Subjects We Will Learn
Reading:
Literature and Informational Text, Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Grammar, Vocabulary,and Spelling
We learn through poems, chants, read aloud stories, differentiated reading groups, and student produced books. We use the Mc-Graw Hill Wonders Language Arts Program
At North Ranch, we help students learn to read and spell high frequency, or “trick” words as well as words that contain new phonetic patterns. We will mix their High Frequency Words in a list with new words that follow new sound pattern.
Writing:
Topics and Activities covered in writing this year include:
1st Graders will be expected to be able to write an observational/ descriptive piece which includes a minimum of 3 complete and coherent sentences that focus on a single topic by the middle of the year. By the end of the year, first graders will write a narrative which includes a minimum of 5 complete and coherent sentences depicting a clear sequence of events, as well as, transition words and some descriptive language and detail.
Students will use Thinking Maps to help brainstorm their ideas.
Students will capitalize proper nouns, the word “I” and the first word in a sentence. They will use correct end punctuation, correctly spell word wall words, high frequency words, and use inventive spelling.
Math:
Math concepts are presented utilizing a hands-on approach. Emphasis is placed on real life skills such as problem solving, graphing, patterning, etc. Some of the concepts taught in first grade include addition, subtraction, geometry, time, money, place value, and measurement (Just to name a few!). Lessons are based on the McGraw-Hill My Math program and Math Language Fluency.
Science and Social Studies:
These are taught using weekly or monthly themes, which are integrated into daily reading, writing, and math activities. When education is centered around particular themes, the interest in learning is piqued and the topic is more thoroughly understood. Other Social Studies topics are covered by utilizing non-fiction books, Second Step, and The Classroom of Difference curriculum. We use the Science curriculum by Scott Foresman in addition to Foss Science Kits.

Second Step
This is a social skills program that teaches children how to change the attitudes and behaviors that may lead to violence. It teaches empathy, impulse control, problem solving, and anger management by modeling of the teachers, discussion, and role-playing
